Uncovering Dizzy Spells: 3 Common Causes of Dizziness

People seek urgent care for a variety of reasons, but dizziness is one of the most common complaints heard in the stark white hallways. It can happen anywhere and any time, which is why understanding how and why dizziness occurs is paramount. When you feel dizzy, you feel physically unsteady. There will be a form of imbalance and lightheadedness, which can lead to vomiting and nausea.

There may be something more urgent going on underneath the dizzy spells, especially since dizziness is merely a symptom. Although it may not last long, the cause needs to be identified as soon as possible. It could lead to a number of problems, such as stress, dehydration, stroke, and other complicated conditions.

To understand more about the causes of dizziness and when to seek urgent care, here is a quick guide for you.

Cause #1: You’re experiencing a low in your blood sugar

Low blood sugar is also known as hypoglycemia, which is a condition where the glucose in your blood drops too low. It’s common among people suffering from diabetes, but it can also happen to individuals who regularly skip meals, exercise too much, and even drink too much medication. Such instances result in low blood pressure and dizziness, and if left untreated, can lead to dire consequences.

Cause #2: You’re extremely dehydrated

This is perhaps one of the most common problems associated with dizziness. You become dehydrated if you’re overheated, especially if you fail to drink enough water and eat enough. Without fluids, the volume of your blood goes down. This lowers your blood pressure, which slows the blood circulation down and keeps oxygen away from your brain. While others can treat dehydration at home, most individuals end up at urgent care centers for IV fluids.

Cause #3: You may be suffering from inner ear problems

Vertigo is yet another common reason for dizziness, and in most cases, the symptom can be severe. You lose your balance suddenly, as your surroundings become a blur of spins and movements that can be impossible to perceive. This is called vertigo, a disease affecting the inner ear. If you’re experiencing sudden bouts of dizziness, especially debilitating ones at random times, consult your doctor immediately.

Is there any way of alleviating the symptom at home?

Although seeking medical attention for these causes is necessary, there are ways to make yourself feel more comfortable before heading to the doctor:

  • Move as slowly as possible.
  • Drink plenty of water and other fluids.
  • Avoid drinking caffeinated beverages and smoking.
